Why the DNC Refuses to Release their Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: A Deep Dive.

The decision from the Democratic National Committee to block the release regarding its internal autopsy report on the last presidential race appears stunning but entirely predictable. Averse to frank assessments, the DNC often functions more like a publicity machine rather than a political organization devoted to building grassroots capacities capable of prevailing at the polls.

A Climate Resistant to Internal Critique

Unwilling to depart from the prevailing attitude of conformity, the DNC has remained within the influence of the previous administration throughout this past year. Releasing an official autopsy could have demonstrated whether party leaders actually want to encourage public discourse regarding the errors that enabled Donald Trump to become president again. Yet, the leadership is moving forward under the pretense that there is little to be learned from the tragic debacle of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? If not, it is an unnecessary diversion from the core mission," a rationale which was presented for withholding the analysis.

Key Issues an Analysis Could Have Examined

An autopsy report of substance would confront certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:

  • Voter Disenchantment: Failing to retain among a significant portion of the electorate who voted for the Democratic ticket in 2020 proved pivotal in the narrowly decided recent race.
  • A Choice to Seek Re-election: The stubborn insistence of the incumbent to run again, and a very late step-aside, has been criticized as denying the party's base the chance for a competitive nomination process.
  • Losing Touch With the Working-Class Base: While facing economic anxiety, the electoral effort reportedly bowing to powerful financial backers while failing to confront the role of profit-seeking.
  • A Gaza Factor: An unwillingness to shift an approach concerning the situation in Gaza allegedly caused losing significant blocs, particularly among youth voters, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • Eroding Youth Backing: Research demonstrates a huge decline in votes for the candidate from young voters.

A Pattern Avoiding Accountability

Choosing secrecy aligns with a longstanding habit to avoid hard truths. It echoes a situation where virtually every Democratic officeholder in Congress supported a sitting president's determination to running for re-election until a disastrous public debate performance compelled a change.

At the same time, large majorities of Democratic voters had been repeatedly informing pollsters that they opposed the incumbent to run again.

Campaign Spending Issues

A substantive autopsy could examine issues regarding financial allocations, such as the amounts flowed to insider consultants and media firms over the course of an electoral effort that managed to spend a staggering amount in a short period.

The Larger Issue

Fundamentally, the secrecy surrounding this report points to an allegiance to the existing power structure who engineered a losing presidential campaign. The signal to the party's base – including millions of dedicated activists – is that they cannot be trusted to understand what party chiefs have learned from an analysis drawing from feedback from all states.

A party unwilling to honestly assess its mistakes finds it difficult to climb out of the cycle which was so advantageous to the winning candidate.
