This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He fears the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the sort of issues that come with most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
