The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
