The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a significant prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
