Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
