Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
