Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Yet

The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team could be building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in diverse methods, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
