Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
